After their disappointing home defeat to West Ham United in their previous league match, it was imperative that Everton bounced back swiftly against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday evening.

But the goal owed plenty to the fabulous cross which substitute Andre Gomes whipped in from out on the left flank.

Not that there’s anything wrong with being an impact substitute when your contribution includes creating match-winning goals, just as he did at Molineux.

The Blues certainly did that, with their 2-1 victory pushing them back into the top four and only four points behind leaders Manchester United.

And we can’t ignore the fitness issues Gomes has struggled with in England either.

Everton face another trip to the west Midlands when they take on Aston Villa on Sunday, and while Gomes can expect to be named among Ancelotti’s substitutes, don’t be surprised if he joins the fray in the second half and positively affects the conclusion of the match.

It was the latest in a short string of encouraging performances as a substitute after a dreadful start in the League Cup against Manchester United shortly before Christmas.
