Many Everton fans have flocked to support former academy player Calum Dyson, who has been forced to retire at the age of 23.

Having joined Everton when he was just seven, Dyson left the Toffees in 2018 for Plymouth Argyle.

Dyson only made two appearances for the Pilgrims, both coming in the EFL Trophy, while a loan move to Stevenage last January proved less fruitful with the forward not managing a single appearance due to injury.

Posting to Twitter on Wednesday, Dyson confirmed that having struggled to recover from a persistent ankle injury for two years, he had been forced to hang up his boots.

As well as Everton’s official account showing support for the former young Toffee, many Everton, Argyle and other clubs’ fans took to social media to offer their support to Dyson.

It is devastating news for Dyson to have to hang up his boot so soon into his career, and I’m glad to see the reaction has overwhelmingly been supportive.

It is easy to assume that a footballer who is on a very attractive wage will be fine without football, but it must be hard to let go of a childhood dream when every part of you wants to hold on.

Everton are usually very supportive in cases like these, so hopefully the club offer their support to Dyson while he finds his footing elsewhere. Best of luck to the guy.
