Callum Wilson: Eddie Howe reveals reason striker misses Everton clash amid Chelsea link

Wilson was nursing an injury in the build-up to the clash but was expected to be named on the bench at the very least.

However, on the same day it was revealed that Chelsea are ready to firm up their interest with an offer for the England striker, Wilson was absent entirely when the squads were announced.

Although, Howe insists the timing is coincidental and says he would have missed the clash even without the speculation surrounding his future.

“Callum’s hamstring strain isn’t serious but enough to keep him out of this game,” he said.

Bournemouth are understood to be holding out for a fee of around £75millon for the 26-year-old.

Chelsea have made no secret of their admiration for him and Blues assistant Gianfranco Zola previously admitted they are tracking the player.

“I’m sure there are a lot of players linked with us,” the Italian said last month.

“Certainly Callum Wilson is doing well for his club and is of interest not only of us but for many.

“He’s strong, fast, and he sees the goal. I like because he’s quick, but also strong in the air, which is a very important quality.

“But I don’t want to go too much into it. He’s doing very well. I’m pleased for him. He has a lot of qualities that can take him a long way.”

Howe moved to issue a hands-off warning to any potential bidders in the build-up to the Everton clash.

“I’ve been told about the speculation, it’s not something I seek to read," he said.

“It’s a waste of time for me to do so. It’s business as normal, Callum has been bright and bubbly this week so no problems there.

"In my opinion, and it’s just my opinion, I wouldn’t sell at any price but I’m the manager of the team trying to create the best team that I can.

“We desperately want to take the team forward and to do that we have got to keep our best players.

“He (Wilson) is a very important member of the team. He has unique attributes that really complement what we do here.

“He’s been a really good goal scorer for us this season, that’s the hardest things to do in the sport so he value him really highly.”
