Everton is building a £1million mental health centre next door to its stadium to help local people beat the blues.

In a groundbreaking move, the Premier League club has also given its first-team captain and manager training to help them spot signs of mental ill-health among players.

The centre, called the People’s Place, will allow the club’s charity, Everton in the Community, to expand its work supporting people on Merseyside with mental issues.

Everton in the Community chief executive Richard Kenyon said: “Prince William has said football clubs can do more in the area of mental health and he’s right.

The money raised from the dinner took the total collected so far for the £1million project to £185,000.

Earlier this week, players attended a charity gala dinner in Liverpool, where more than £60,000 was raised for the new centre in the shadow of the club’s Goodison Park ground.

Meanwhile another charity, Chasing the Stigma, has been running courses teaching employees at Everton how to spot the signs of mental ill-health and offer support.
