Everton have appointed former Bolton and Iceland defender Gretar Steinsson as their new chief European scout.

The 36-year-old, who made 126 appearances for Wanderers in the Premier League and won 46 caps for his country, steps up from League One side Fleetwood Town, where he worked as the club's technical director for nearly four years.

Steinsson will work closely with Everton's director of football, Marcel Brands, who signed him as a player for Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar in 2005.

Everton have made Fleetwood technical director Gretar Steinsson their chief European scout

Steinsson played for Bolton in the Premier League and also won 46 caps for Iceland

A former Iceland team-mate of Toffees playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson, Steinsson made his name with Bolton, playing for the club for over four years in England's top-flight.

He also played for clubs including Young Boys in Switzerland and Kayserispor in Turkey before hanging up his boots in 2013.

After retiring, Steinsson completed a post-graduate degree in football management at the Johan Cruyff Institute in Holland.

He was then employed in a football operations role by his former club AZ, before linking up with Fleetwood and working alongside manager Joey Barton this season.

Steinsson will play a key role in identifying new talent under Brands and chief UK scout Martyn Glover as they prepare for the January transfer window.
