Tony Cottee believes his former club Everton need their stadium move to be completed to compete with the Premier League's top sides but has backed the fans to recreate Goodison Park's atmosphere at Bramley-Moore Dock.

“I loved the Boleyn Ground and I love Goodison Park but when you move to a new ground it's the fans who make the noise and create the atmosphere.

“I know that there are a lot of Evertonians, probably all of them, who don't actually want to leave Goodison Park but they accept if you want to get to the next level and compete with the big boys then you've got to expand your capacity – which they can't do – or move on.

“West Ham has obviously been a little bit more high-profile than others.

Everton stadium director Colin Chong issued an update this week on the project in which he spoke about how the club will use the dock's attributes within their design while confirming that plans remain on track.

Cottee, who joined the Blues for a then club-record £2.2million in 1988 from his local team West Ham United believes that in time such moves are necessary to progress.

However, travelling Evertonians got the opportunity to sample the Premier League's newest stadium at Tottenham Hotspur, a bespoke football venue which will be much more like how their own new home should look, on the final day of last season.
