Everton handed complicated summer transfer question as logical solution hangs in balance

Maarten Stekelenburg has not often complicated things since arriving at Everton in the summer of 2016.

Joining as Ronald Koeman's first signing, the Dutch goalkeeper spent most of his maiden campaign jostling with Joel Robles for the number one jersey and made 19 Premier League appearances.

But things were complicated, for Stekelenburg mostly, when Marco Silva sanctioned a move for Jonas Lossl last summer.

If not, his departure will make things a little more complicated for Ancelotti and Brands this summer.

Should he decide to move on this summer - at the time of writing new contract discussions have not started - Everton will be forced to consider a tricky transfer scenario.

It seems logical for Everton therefore, if a deal can be struck to suit both themselves and the player, to offer Stekelenburg a fresh 12-month deal and head into the new campaign with three senior international goalkeepers on the books.

Lossl, firstly, would be expected to return after signing a three-year deal last summer.
