Everton are reportedly leading the race for Ajax star David Neres this summer, but would the likely high transfer fee be worth spending for the Toffees?

Neres would certainly be a marquee signing, and not only would bringing the Brazilian into Marco Silva’s ranks prove positive from a performance perspective, it would also be huge in showing other clubs and players that Everton mean business.

Neres, who particularly impressed during Ajax’s fantastic Champions League campaign last season, is reportedly keen on joining the Premier League over Ligue 1, giving Everton an advantage over the Parisian giants.

UOL’s report also claims that the Toffees have found it ‘easy’ to negotiate with Neres’ representatives thus far due to their past dealings, having communicated with the same representatives when reaching agreements to sign both Richarlison and Bernard last summer.

Not only does Neres have the potential to be a star for the Blues, especially considering his young age, but the club also need to be able to show they have growing ambition both on the field and in the transfer market.

Neres would likely cost around £40million this summer, and Ajax would presumably prefer to shift him sooner rather than later so that they can find adequate replacements, so a deal wouldn’t be expected to go down to the wire.

If Everton do find themselves in the position where a deal appears likely, then it becomes imperative that they do their utmost to secure the star forward, despite the high price tag.
