Everton have taken another tentative step towards their £500 million new stadium by confirming overwhelming community support for a move to a dockside arena.

The Merseyside club was compelled to conduct a formal public consultation into the plans to leave Goodison Park and build at Bramley-Moore Dock.

Of over 20,000 questioned during the consultation, 94 per cent backed the choice of site.

Around 2,000 of those involved in the survey said they were not supporters of Everton, enabling Everton to argue broad backing from the scheme is not solely based on club affiliation.

The proposed area in North Liverpool is need of redevelopment benefiting the entire city.

Everton Chief Executive Professor Denise Barrett-Baxendale said: “These results are more than a vote of confidence in our plans; they show people recognise the transformational impact our stadium will have on North Liverpool and indeed the positive effect it will have on the wider city region.
