Everton have won council approval for major improvements to their Finch Farm academy.

Plans for a new indoor pitch at the Halewood training complex got a step closer after Knowsley Council's planning committee gave the go-ahead last night.

And plans for an indoor pitch would normally had been deemed 'inappropriate development'.

A statement from Everton in planning documents said: “The existing academy facilities at Finch Farm do provide for most requirements but there is a need for new/replacement facilities as the academy continues to develop.

“That's the first phase and we have two other phases which are part of a masterplan for Finch Farm.”

The club say the new indoor pitch is needed because the current one is no longer big enough following changes brought about by the Elite Player Performance Plan in 2013.

The reason for the need for the secretary of state for housing, communities and local government to sign off the plans is that the land is technically on the green belt.
