The Premier League will hold meetings with managers and club captains this week regarding new COVID protocols amid concerns the government may intervene.

Criticism in the past week has been directed towards players following breaches of contact during celebrations and similar, which has led to fresh debates about whether professional football should be allowed to continue amid the third UK lockdown.

The Athletic reports plans were drawn up on Wednesday evening as there are fears the government could step in.

A series of COVID-19 rule breaches among footballers have been highlighted in recent weeks, leading to doubts on whether elite sport should continue to be exempt from the restrictions imposed on the rest of the country.

Players have been told not to hug, shake hands or swap shirts to mitigate against the spread of the virus - although those protocols have been broken and there has been plenty of discussions around the situation.

With the UK recording the highest number of COVID deaths on Wednesday, taking the overall toll to above 100,000, the scrutiny is only likely to increase further and the Premier League wants to ensure they are doing everything possible to continue the season.
