And so is this the end of the road for Marco Silva at Everton?

Tonight, as he walked away from the scene of a mauling, and down the tunnel, he was braced for a phone call from the powers that be that would bring an end to his 18 month reign as manager.

It felt like it to all of those inside Anfield and though he didn't say it, to him as well.

But through the pain of such a defeat, at here of all places as well, the club, Silva and the supporters may now, finally, actually have some clarity.

In many ways, stability is still what Everton crave, not yet more upheaval and change, but this evening, it felt as though that was exactly what was coming.

It has been a poorly kept secret in the world of football that Everton have not been able to identify, as of yet, an adequate replacement should they tell Silva he had come to the end of the line.

Silva had long looked a beaten man by the time the fifth was scored in the final minute and though he will, once again, have no reason to question his players' commitment and fight, their shambolic defending looks to have sealed his fate.
