Liverpool took a 4-2 lead over Everton at half-time of the Merseyside on Wednesday night and the frenetic opening 45 minutes set a Premier League record.

Never before had there been six goals scored in the first half of a Merseyside derby in the Premier League, that was until the 45 minutes of madness at Anfield.

Remarkably there were only six shots on target in the half with all of them going in, which does not paint goalkeepers Adrian and Jordan Pickford in glory.

Divock Origi opened the scoring for Liverpooll after just six minutes with Xherdan Shaqiri doubling the lead 11 minutes later.

Michael Keane got Everton on the score sheet with a smart finish on 21 minutes but Origi netted again 10 minutes later with a beautifully taken goal from a Dejan Lovren long ball.

Sadio Mane, who had been brilliant all half and supplied two assists, got a goal for himself just before half-time as he rounded off a rapid counter-attack.

It is a remarkable departure from recent Merseyside derbies, with the last three encounters producing just one goal between them.

There has only ever been six goals in an entire Premier League Merseyside derby before, when the sides drew 3-3 at Goodison Park in November 2013.

Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez both gave Liverpool a lead, either side of a Kevin Mirallas goal for the Toffees.

Everton then took the lead through a Romelu Lukaku brace, with Daniel Sturridge scoring an equaliser with a minute to go.
