Virgil van Dijk is facing months on the sidelines after suffering damage to his ACL in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Everton on Saturday.

In the first half of the Merseyside Derby thriller, the Reds defender was forced off after a horror challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Pickford, the England No.1, was fortunate to escape a red card after scything the Dutchman down in the box, clattering into his knee with the challenge.

Van Dijk went to hospital on Sunday where he underwent scans to determine the extent of the injury and it has now been confirmed that he has suffered damage to his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

The Netherlands international is now facing up to eight months on the sidelines, but the Premier League side have yet to confirm the severity of the injury.
