Marco Silva reveals why Everton missed out on Wilfried Zaha in 'difficult' transfer window

Everton boss Silva has said it was difficult in the transfer market this summer, as player valuations were very high.

He said some of the transfer fees that Premier League clubs were asking for made it difficult to get all of their targets.

The former Watford and Hull City manager had briefly been interested in signing Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha.

But, Everton pulled out of a deal after Palace wanted at least £80million for the striker.

Silva admitted that he wanted to sign a left-footed midfielder that operates on the right-hand side, but failed to sign anyone that matched the description.

The club had specific targets, but the huge amounts of money involved makes it very difficult - especially when trying to buy from other clubs in England.

“We have some names but the market is really difficult,” Silva told the Liverpool Echo, after being asked about signing a right winger.

“We had our targets for the summer, and at the end of the market, if you achieve 20 per cent of those players, it will be very good because the market is always changing.

“I can tell you, last season was fantastic for us. This season we have signed very good players but the market was more difficult.

“You look at the money some clubs are asking for players and the market is really difficult in England and to buy players inside is something unbelievable.”

Everton did, however, manage to sign midfielder Alex Iwobi from Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

Iwobi was one of Silva’s key targets this summer, he claimed, and spent £28m on the 23-year-old.

Everton splashed the cash during the transfer window in a bid to break into the Premier League top six.

The Toffees spent almost £110m to improve their squad, without spending more than £30m on any one individual player.

Silva also recruited Juventus starlet Moise Kean for £25m, Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes for £23m (who was at the club on loan for the previous season), and two-time Premier League champion Fabian Delph from Manchester City for £9m.

Everton’s next Premier League fixture will be against Watford at home on Saturday (3pm).
