Schalke manager David Wagner has opened up on why Everton's Jonjoe Kenny was a top transfer target for him in the summer.

And former Huddersfield boss David Wagner has now revealed he has been a long-term fan of Kenny - and there was no doubt in his mind he would be a top target this summer.

And Wagner believes the defender's decision to move to Schalke is a brave one, and something that will certainly benefit the Kirkdale-born youngster in the future.

To go to the Bundesliga, you have to be – and luckily Jonjoe is – very brave, because when you leave your home country and you leave your comfort zone you have to have a very strong character.

"Not every player is brave enough to make this decision and sometimes they are more keen on playing in the Championship, or even League One, because they can stay near [to home].

"I had a good picture of Jonjoe and, after I joined Schalke, we all together agreed that we had to sign a right-back.

The right-back made a loan switch to the Bundesliga early in the transfer window, with the Blues later bringing Djibril Sidibe to Goodison on a temporary basis from Monaco.
