Tim Howard opens up on time Moyes lost it with Everton team-mate

Tim Howard has opened up on two contrasting David Moyes memories which stand out during his time at Everton.

The former USA international played 414 games for the Blues across a 10-year spell at Goodison Park, after joining the club from Manchester United initially on loan in the summer of 2006.

The 41-year-old recently spoke to the American Toffee Podcast about his time with the club and how his exit from the Red Devils came about.

The goalkeeper left Old Trafford after three years with the club but, even though he knew it was the right decision, he still had a certain amount of fear in telling then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson about his plans.

Howard said: "In my third season I thought my time has come, being a Manchester United player is cool but I need to have a career for myself. I always want more.

"So I remember thinking, 'That's it, I'm done. No hard feelings, but I'm done'.

"I remember driving in to training for a week and a half, geeing myself up to go and knock on his [Sir Alex Ferguson's] door. Every day I'd go upstairs, his door would be closed, I'd kind of listen in and think, 'He's on the phone I'll come back tomorrow'.

"I was scared out of my pants!"

Howard moved to Everton and made his loan move permanent just a few months after his arrival.

The connection that sprouted between the goalkeeper and Moyes during their respective spells with the club was key, and the 41-year-old clearly expressed how fondly he felt about his former manager.

He also went on to tell two very contrasting stories about the now West Ham boss.

"David Moyes is a man I adore deeply, and I mean that sincerely. I shared so many incredible moments with him," Howard added.

"One that stands out for me was an undisclosed player, who I cannot name, decided he was going to test David Moyes' resolve - and that ended with the player being pinned up against a locker!

"He quickly backed down from whatever it was he had a gripe with, so Moyes was not to be crossed! I always remember it because the player was a big talker, he had a lot to say!"

The other tale from Howard was one that was much more personal to him, and shows a completely different side of the former Everton manager.

The goalkeeper added: "The other thing, and I think this probably sums up who he is, in 2010 we played one of our first games at Blackburn and I was going through the early stages of a divorce at the time.

"I chucked one in against Blackburn away, it was awful. It wasn't as if I was trying to do it, I slid out and Sylvain Distin pushed the striker off of me. I got up and went to bowl it out but next thing I knew it wasn't even in my hands.

"The boy tapped it in, we lose 1-0 and it couldn't possibly get any worse. I never lean on excuses so I took it on the chin.

"Maybe the next week or the next day I went to the gaffer's office and knocked on his door. I remember I was in tears and I told him, 'You're well within your rights to say whatever you need to say to me, it was a massive screw up. Just so you know, this is what's going on in my personal life'.

"I'd kept it quiet for so long, it wasn't about football it was about my personal life, but I felt like the two had blended together in that moment.

"He was a father figure to me so I could go in and tell him. I remember being the most amazing human being at that moment, there was a genuine love and concern for what was going on in my world.

"He's a special person to me."

Howard went on to discuss his role as an Everton ambassador, Carlo Ancelotti's arrival at the club, the importance of Marcel Brands and much more in a wide-ranging discussion with the American Toffee Podcast - which you can listen to HERE.
