Vincent Kompany has backed John Stones to prove he has what it takes to fill the void left by Manchester City ’s former skipper.

Stones has struggled to play at a consistent level for City since his £50million move from Everton in 2016, with injuries and off-field issues combining to undermine his form.

The 25-year-old central defender, who also endured a torrid time with England in the summer at the Nations League finals, could return from his latest injury at Norwich tomorrow.

Despite his belief in Stones, Kompany warned his former team-mate the competition for places at City is so intense he must prove his worth in training every day.

Former City skipper Kompany is confident Stones can do that, but warned him there can be no deviating from the relentlessly high standards set by boss Pep Guardiola.

“But the one thing I wish for him is consistency - consistency of games and consistency of fitness.

“He’s just a top-class defender.
