Wayne Rooney has revealed how he almost joined Chelsea and Newcastle United before moving to Manchester United from Everton.

I couldn't wait another year, I couldn't stay another year at Everton, so I was prepared to go to Newcastle for that year.

Newcastle's interest was widely reported, but Rooney says Everton had hoped to sell him to Chelsea before United eventually paid up.

Everton banked £27million for Rooney after he played a starring role in Euro 2004 which made him one of the hottest talents in European football.

“It was basically whatever Newcastle paid for me, United would have paid a year later.”

“I knew it [joining United] was an option before Euro 2004,” Rooney told UTD Podcast .

United obviously didn't want me to go there so I came here.
