There was a dramatic start to Saturday’s Merseyside derby, with two early goals and the early departure of Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk, who limped off after a SHOCKING tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The England and Toffees No.1 was lucky to escape a red card after scything the Dutchman down in the box, clattering into his knee with a reckless challenge.

It appeared a certain penalty and sending off, but after a VAR review it was clear Van Dijk was offside when he was put through on goal.

Van Dijk wasn’t so fortunate, though, as he limped off inside ten minutes to be replaced by Joe Gomez.

The Toffees centre-back rose basically unchallenged in the penalty area to plant a firm header on the set-piece.

Everton didn’t wait long to take advantage of Van Dijk’s absence, as Michael Keane soon made it 1-1 in the 19th minute with a simple header from a corner.

The goalkeeper’s latest mistake came after comments from talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino, who branded Adrian ‘the worst No.2 in the Premier League’ ahead of the derby.
