Why Pickford avoided a red card for reckless challenge on Van Dijk

Liverpool fans were left reeling in Saturday’s Merseyside derby as Jordan Pickford avoided punishment for a rash challenge on Virgil Van Dijk.

VAR adjudged Van Dijk to be offside by the narrowest of margins meaning there was no red card for the challenge because the offside cancels serious foul play afterwards, according to ESPN.

Pickford clattered into the Liverpool centre-back in the Everton box with a scissor-type challenge which later forced Van Dijk out of action, and replaced by Joe Gomez.

Official Premier League guidance is that Pickford COULD have been sent off for the challenge on Van Dijk.

VAR would then have had to decide on Pickford's challenge, a penalty and a possible red card.

With Van Dijk forced off after 11 minutes, Everton equalised from a corner as James Rodriguez’s delivery was headed home by Michael Keane.

Ironically, under last season’s offside rule, Van Dijk would have been onside with the new point on the arm, rather than the armpit.
